With very little lead time, work was due to start in December on a substantial order for the London Borough of Havering. Two further orders placed in January more than doubled the workload. The challenge was that we were required to complete the works by the end of the financial year.
The combined works comprised 2,123 windows, 332 fire resistant front doors and 327 balcony doors, as well as associated works on fascias, soffits and rainwater goods, concrete repairs and external decorations. The provision of all scaffolding was a further requirement. The work was spread over three estates in the borough and involved 37 blocks of three and four storey flats and a number of street properties.
A little help from the weather would have been useful, but what we got was the worst winter for almost two decades. The concrete repairs could not be carried out at temperatures below five degrees celcius, restricting work prior to Christmas and into the new year. Fortunately, our substantial production capacity was able to continue with the manufacture of the frames in readiness and the experienced site management team was geared up to ensure that all works were carried out swiftly and efficiently to our usual high standard. As a result, the work, which included far more external repairs and decorations than originally planned, was completed on time and to schedule.
